I did the basic research for this blog series a couple of years ago. Then, as usual, flitted along to the next thing that caught my interest. Now I'm trying to flesh the cases out and present to you my justification for not being a fan of walking along the canal on dark and lonely nights...

The Evening Express of May 23rd 1908 reported on an unidentified dead body that had been found in an archway under the canal at Pontypool the day before:
"PONTYPOOL MYSTERY. The body of a man was found in an archway beneath the Monmouthshire Canal, near Pontypool Road Station, yesterday evening. The body was removed to thw workhouse mortuary. It is that of a man between 50 and 60 years of age. A pawnticket for a watch found in a pocket bears the name of David Howells."

The Pontypool Free Press of May 29th reported on the inquest; the jury returned a verdict of "Death From Natural Causes." Based on the name on the pawnticket the Glamorgan Gazette of May 29th identified the man as David Howells of Cwmfelin - and were subsequently obliged to retract the statement on June 5th.
The man's actual identity remains a mystery...
