I did the basic research for this blog series a couple of years ago. Then, as usual, flitted along to the next thing that caught my interest. Now I'm trying to flesh the cases out and present to you my justification for not being a fan of walking along the canal on dark and lonely nights...

The Monmouthshire Merlin of December 26th 1840 reported:
"DEATH BY DROWNING. Yesterday the body of an aged man was found in the Monmouthshire canal, near Cwm Braen. We understand his name was John Worrall, that he was a native of Staffordshire, and one of the workmen employed in the lately-erected extensive works of the Stourbridge Fire Clay Company. It appears he came to Newport on Sunday last, intending to remit through the post-office a payment to his club in Staffordshire, and that on his return home in the evening, he missed his way, accidentally fell into the canal, and was drowned."

Born c. 1772, John was 68 when he died. He was buried on December 27th 1840
