I did the basic research for this blog series a couple of years ago. Then, as usual, flitted along to the next thing that caught my interest. Now I'm trying to flesh the cases out and present to you my justification for not being a fan of walking along the canal on dark and lonely nights...

The Monmouthshire Merlin of Saturday July 9th 1836 reported:

"FATAL ACCIDENT. On Wednesday morning last a man named Phillips, a hallier, went to bathe in the Canal, near Pont-y-moile gate, and was drowned; the unfortunate man was alone, and is supposed to have been seized by cramp."

I did a quick record search for likely candidates and the only adult male Phillips buried in Monmouthshire that July was the 84-year-old Emanuel Philips of Common Cefn Llewyn...
