Unidentified Decedents - Found 14/02/1988

NCA CASE 06-026109 / SOUTH WALES POLICE

A man's body was found in the Bristol Channel near Newport on Valentine's Day 1988. The man was afro-caribbean, of stocky build, and stood 6 foot (183cm) tall. He had short black hair and was estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old.

He was wearing faded blue jeans (Wrangler, 36" waist and 34" leg) and brown belt, a grey t-shirt with an Amandla power fist symbol with spear and 'Cultural Ensemble of the National African Congress', a brown checked shirt (Tesco, size large), and an olive green crew neck chunky knit woollen jumper. He was also wearing a grey/blue scarf, a navy blue donkey jacket with blue/green check lining (Boys Own, size medium), and a pair of polyester/cotton shell gloves with foam lining (size large).

On his feet the man was wearing a pair of green flash Dunlop trainers in a size 9.

He was carring an A-Z street map opened on pages marked Bristol, but showing the area of Cheltenham.



The South Wales Echo reported on Monday February 15th 1988:

Body still not identified

South Wales Police are still trying to identify a body floating in the Bristol Channel near Usk-mouth, Newport yesterday. The body, thought to be of a black man in his 20s, may have been in the water for up to two weeks, said a police spokesman. It was retrieved by the Penarth lifeboat.
