The event was investigated by Ron Lalek of Broughton who told the Wrexham Evening Leader that about 21:15 a witness drove up Gwernant Road to the apparent source of the balls. "They searched the area for half an hour and saw three coloured sparks and many white lights which shot into the air over a hedge just 10m in front of them. This happened twice."

Merthyr Tydfil
Law professor Tim Richards, 46, and a fellow instructor were driving north between Quaker Yard and Merther Tydfil, when they saw a huge green light descend towards the ground. "We saw something large, about a sixth the size of the moon," Richard's reported. "We saw it only for a second, but it was definitely not like anything we have seen before." It was bright green and disappeared behind a bank of cloud toward the north-northwest. As there were no street lights, it actually lit up the cloud from behind. It was not a reflection from car lights. It was too large to be a shooting star, and it was definitely not an airplane." Thanks Ben Field of BUFOD.

Ken Howard (53) saw a silver/white disc with no discernible wings, lights or markings. He could not judge the size but slightly later his observation of airliners in the same part of the sky indicated that it was much smaller (or very much higher).
It was almost directly overhead and appeared to be travelling at very high speed, on a slightly erratic course, from north west to south east. There was no sound or vapour trail. It disappeared in an instant.
Duration of sighting: 20 seconds.

Couldn't judge the size, but slightly later observations of airliners in the same part of the sky would indicate that it was much smaller (or very much higher). Almost directly overhead. Appeared to be travelling at very high speed, slightly erratic course, from North West to South East. No accompanying sounds or contrails/vapour trails. Sky was very clear/ sunny weather. | [Did the UFO do any strange things like hover and then zoom off quickly:] No, but it disappeared from view in an instant. Can't explain this! | [How long did you see the UFO for:] 00.00.20 | The only possible explanation I can think of is that it was a small jet travelling at very high altitude. However, if it was, it's speed must have been phenomenal!"

A local couple observed a metallic sphere for approximately 15 minutes. "The couple described the sphere as being perfectly stationary despite strong winds. A thin layer of cloud passed behind the object and it was shortly after engulfed by thicker cloud. The object did not reappear.

Story recounted on UFO Updates discussion list in November 1999: The flap began on Sunday, July 17, 1999, at 4 p.m., when a woman from Ebbw Vale and two members of her family "saw a metallic sphere while travelling from Aberbeeg towards Cum," and watched the object for 15 minutes. The UFO 'was described as a metallic sphere. It was observed for 15 minutes" and "was stationary despite strong winds. A thin layer of cloud passed behind the object, and it was shortly after enveloped by thick cloud...the object did not reappear that day."

Pontypridd
'After dropping my daughter at Hawthorn Leisure Centre for a friend's birthday party, I was driving home along the A4054 at Rhydyfelin, when I noticed something strange travelling low in a south-westerly direction across the sky over Pontypridd. I stopped my car on a straight section of road and got out to get a better view of the object. It appeared to be a hang glider pilot without the accompanying hang glider. It resembled a person standing, and was travelling horizontally. As it approached the Graig mountain, it suddenly began a downward spiral course and eventually appeared to land on the mountain, which I was unable to visually confirm. The weather was typical of a summer's evening, warm and quite still with little if any breeze.'

Ebbw Vale
A driver travelling from Brynmawr to Ebbw Vale on the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road saw a cigar shaped object. The object was said to be stationary in the sky at approximately 2,000 feet above and beyond the Ebbw Vale roundabout.

Same case mentioned in this piece from the Western Mail 16/05/2000 via UFO Updates mailing list from June 2000:
METALLIC SPHERE UFOs SEEN OVER ABERGAVENNY, WALES
Large formations or "fleets" of metallic sphere UFOs have been seen repeatedly over The Valleys region of eastern Wales, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of Cardiff. Since November 1999, the UFOs have been sighted hovering near the cities of Ebbw Vale, Abergavenny and Abertillery.
According to the newspaper Western Mail, "It's official. We are not alone in the universe, and the latest target for the extraterrestrials is the Valleys. In a scene that could have come straight from the Hollywood blockbuster Independence Day, people have reported seeing 'fleets' of metallic spheres floating 2,000 feet (600 meters) in the air. This may sound like the opening lines of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds but according to our Abertillery-based UFO enthusiast, the spheres are not science fiction but fact.""'The first incident we had was last year,' said Paul McCarty, a founder/member of the South Wales UFO Network (SWUFON). 'It (the UFO) was spotted travelling up the Valleys. We had a report about this, and another witness saw it. He was in a car full of people, and it was going in the same direction,' he said."Paul put out a call for other witnesses and was inundated. All the descriptions of the metallic spheres were strikingly similar. They were said to resemble ball bearings. They often hovered in the air, and at other times moved at incredible speeds Paul said they had discounted the suggestions it could be a balloon.""'The thing was stationary, and it was there for at least fifteen minute, with clouds going in front and behind it.' He said there have been UFOs over the past year along the (motorway) A465 between Abergavenny and Ebbw Vale." (See the Western Mail of Cardiff for May 16, 2000, "'Alien Visitors' take an interest in the Valleys." Many thanks to Gerry Lovell for this newspaper article.)

Waunarlwydd
One night, not long after they were married, about 1 or 2 AM, Darren (see the Crofty sighting in 1988), 26-years-old, was in bed with his wife at home in Waunarlwydd and was awoken by a bright light which lit up their front bedroom window, accompanied by a humming sound.
His wife couldn’t move, but was awake. Both then went back to sleep. In the morning, she asked, “What happened last night?” and they talked about seeing the light, but could not remember seeing anything else. Darren’s tattoo on the top of his left arm, felt raised up and sore for good part of the day, it felt inflamed as if it had only just been done.
This case displays classic elements of an abduction scenario, light seen in room, immobility, lost time and amnesia, and physical effects. It deserves further investigation especially as Darren has stated that his sighting in 1988 also suggests a missing time episode. At present however, Darren is unwilling to undergo hypnotic regression.

Anglesey
Meirion Jones (31) belatedly reported a sighting from about 1999. They saw a metallic silver coloured ball, about the size of a full moon in the sky, which flew over their car while they were waiting for a friend. Although the car window was open, no engine noise could be heard from the object. The sighting lasted around ten seconds.
"It was, either flat and round or round like a ball, Not sure what size it was, at a guess about the size of a small aircraft. In the sky it was about the size of a full moon. It was a metalic silver colour. | no, just flew straight over my car, I had my window open, but could hear any engine noice. | I know It was a long time ago but here is my story, I was waiting for my friend in my car, and i know there is an Airfield nearby, that is why i was looking up in the sky for aircraft anyway. But after a short time i saw the UFO. It was flying straight towards my direction. I couldnt make out how big, how high or its shape or how fast it was traveling at, because i didnt know what it was exept for the description above. It tool about 6 seconds to go from the time i spotted it near the horizon to the time i was looking up as far as i could to my car windscreen. By the time i got out of my car it had gone! 2 weeks later a couple of people (milk lorry driver and i think it was a postman) saw something early morning about 35 miles away (near where i lived) and it was reported in the local paper (think it was The Herald)and it said in the paper the only other reported sighting was 2 weeks earlier in Anglsey, where i was. but i didnt report it! Hope this is of some help."
Ieuan Wyn Jones, then MP for Anglesey, wrote to the ombudsman on behalf of a constituent who was struggling to get anywhere with their research via the MOD.
