I did the basic research for this blog series a couple of years ago. Then, as usual, flitted along to the next thing that caught my interest. The Monmouthshire Merlin of 14th November 1873 reported that an old man named Moreman had been found dead in the canal. He was last seen alive on the night of Saturday 8th November, buying goods at Clark's shop. The assumption was that, in the darkness, he accidentally walked into the canal and drowned.
Death records revealed that the man's first name was Stephen and he had been born in 1803. The burial register recorded that Moreman, of Upper Cwmbran, was buried on Wednesday 12th November by F. W. Fryer.
So far the only other thing I've been able to find is a report in the Western Mail of 14th November 1873 with the same scant details of Moreman's death.
