Wales has had more than its fair share of UFO encounters over the years. And that's without even counting SuperTed. Read on for 10 of the weirdest...


In 1856 Ronald Rhys was walking home from his work as a farm labourer in the Vale of Neath, when he saw a strange light in a nearby field. It was making a whooshing noise and, being of good Welsh stock, Rhys went to investigate. The next thing he knew he was floating in the air, and after that his memories were patchy. Tiny people with swords collected his blood, and one being which was green with a bald head cut into his stomach and took out his organs.

When Ronald woke up he was lying in the field - and wandered back into work only to discover he had lost a full week. In common with many modern encounters, afterwards Rhys exhibited symptoms similar to radiation exposure. His' skin was pink and scarred, and his hair was falling out. Even in the 1850s, the Welsh were being targeted...


Much more recently, a police helicopter gave chase to a UFO over Cardiff in the early hours of June 8th, 2008. Waiting for clearance to land at the St Athan Ministry of Defence base, the three man crew were shocked to see another craft hurtling towards them. The helicopter swerved sharply to avoid collision, before following it across the Bristol Channel as far as the North Devon coast, where dwindling fuel supplies forced the police to retreat.

A former RAF glider pilot, pensioner George Withrington, also reported seeing lights flashing in the sky, while a spokesperson for South Wales Police said: 'The crew are very experienced and responded in a professional manner in relation to what they saw.' The Ministry of Defence spokesperson was less magnanimous, stating: 'It is certainly not advisable for police helicopters to go chasing what they think are UFOs.'


Cardiff has long been a popular destination for visiting UFOs. In May 1909 'scareships', strange oblong bodies whirring through the sky, were witnessed across the UK. Perhaps the most unusual sighting was that of a Mr C. Lethbridge. Sometime dock worker, sometime Punch and Judy purveyor, Lethbridge was pushing his Punch and Judy cart home via Caerphilly Mountain on Tuesday 16th May.

Lethbridge, while admitting he had had a 'sleever', maintained that he hadn't been drunk when he came across the craft and two young men dressed in heavy fur coats and hats. On seeing him the men 'jumped up and jabbered furiously to each other in a strange lingo - Welsh or something; it was certainly not English.' They then got into 'a kind of little carriage suspended from' the craft, and rose into the air 'in a zig-zag fashion'. Other witnesses to a strange craft in the sky were a railway signalman named Robert Westlake, the chauffer to Archdeacon Bevan in Brecon, and men working on the SS Arndale.

On Wednesday night the airship was sighted in Pontypool by everyone ranging from night shift workers at the town forge, to Mr Garth Fisher, 'a well known local architect', and similar sightings came in from Monmouth, Maesteg and even far north, in Aberystwyth. Contemporary explanations included advertising models, super advanced spy ships, and youthful pranks. None was completely satisfactory and by July Lethbridge, as he told the Evening Express, was 'sick of the whole matter'.


No round-up of alien activity is complete without a mention of cattle mutilation. Or sheep mutilation, as is more common in mid-Wales, an area of the country largely made up of farmland. Woodside Farm in Bleddfa, Powys, has reported that around 20 ewes disappear without trace every year, and in 2011 Dyfed-Powys police even received a report that witnesses had seen a sheep taken aboard a UFO in Llanybydder.

More frightening are the rumours of human mutilation cases on Talybont Mountain in the Brecon Beacons. Reporter and UFO enthusiast Derek Gough was allegedly shown photographs of such cases - then received death threats and had his house mysteriously burn down. Gough turned the photographs over to DC Adams of the South Wales Police, who went from promises of an imminent arrest to claiming it had only been a prank. Gough eventually handed all his information over to Richard Hall, who made a NSFW documentary on it HERE.


One of the most famous victim of alien abduction in the UK is, arguably, Hilary Porter. First taken at the age of 5, Hilary says that she has been abducted so many times over the years she has now lost count. A stretch of road between Cardiff and Swansea is a particular hotspot; in September 1970 Hilary and her then husband were driving home from Ireland. As they approached the original Severn Crossing they blacked out, coming to to find themselves outside a garage on the outskirts of Cardiff. The petrol gauge hadn't budged.

Flashbacks from that encounter troubled her for years, and it was 2009 before she finally drove the stretch of road again to visit a friend in Llanelli. The trip itself was uneventful, but Hilary was abducted from her bed during the night, waking in the morning with an unexplained black eye.

Hilary believes that aliens are specifically targeting Wales and the rest of the so called 'Celtic Fringe' because the genetic make up of its residents is more interesting. She told Wales Online, 'They are trying to make alien human hybrids and it seems the genetic material of these [Celtic] races are more compatible.' You can find out more about Hilary HERE.


Wales is something of a UFO hotspot - there have been over 100 reported sightings in South Wales alone since 2000. In July 2015 Darren Millar, Conservative AM for Clwyd West, raised the issue at the Senedd, asking if the Welsh government was going to do anything about it. The response he received read:

Or, for those of us who don't read Klingon: 'The minister will reply in due course. However this is a non-devolved matter.' That's what you get for boldly going, eh?


They can be a bit of a touchy subject, bringing up images of earth loving types stomping all over private property. But Wales was also the site of some early crop circles which deserve a mention. A number of circles were reported during WW2, when trampling corn for a 'lark' was certainly not advisable - evacuee Barry Smith was given a good thrashing on suspicion of having created a circle in Arddleen in 1941. Another early circle was reported by William Cyril Williams, who remembered seeing a circle form one August morning on his father's farm in Cilycwm, Dyfed, in the late 1940s:


The area around the farm was surrounded by hills on all sides, and Mr Williams recalled that circles had been seen there 'frequently'. As he watched on this occasion, in a matter of 'only a couple of seconds or so the wheat fell down producing a sharp-edged circle 3 to 4 metres in diameter.' Some of the earlier circles Mr Williams had seen had stalks still standing in their centres, but this one was completely flat. After 4 or 5 seconds the whirlwind died out completely. This story came to light after Mr Williams wrote a letter to the Sunday Mirror in 1991.
After the Ministry of Defence closed its UFO desk in 2009, its files were released to the public. Strange lights in the sky made up the bulk of reports, with examples coming from all over Wales. Although most have fairly mundane explanations, like aircraft lights or Chinese lanterns, others are harder to ignore. Forget the Bermuda Triangle, Wales has its own Broad Haven mystery. On February 4th 1977 a yellow cigar shaped craft is said to have landed in a field next to Broad Haven Primary School, witnessed by 14 pupils - 6 of whom saw a silver man with pointed ears. Frightened by the experience, one of the pupils told his parents that afternoon. They, in turn, contacted Randall Jones Pugh, a local BUFORA (British UFO Research Association) co-ordinator.

The school's headmaster, Ralph Llewellyn, was convinced by the similarities after asking the boys to draw what they had seen. A few days later dinnerladies and teaching staff also saw a silver craft in the field - and confirmed with the local sewage works that it wasn't one of their tankers.
In the months following the encounter, further strange sightings poured in. In April, Rosa Granville, landlady of the Haven Fort Hotel in Little Haven was woken at 2:30am. From her window she could see what looked like an 'upside down saucer' and two 'faceless humanoid' creatures with pointed heads. When she went to inspect the area in the light of day, it was to find a patch of flattened grass. At Ripperston Farm the Coombs family were terrorised by aliens, culminating on the evening of April 23rd with a 7ft tall spaceman standing outside their living room window. Even my own mother is convinced she saw a flying saucer land and two bald men emerge while on a caravan holiday in nearby Haverfordwest at around the same time.

Although many felt the sightings were linked in some way to the nearby RAF Brawdy, the Ministry of Defence - though carrying out discreet inquiries - denied all knowledge. One of the schoolboy witnesses similarly discredited the idea that it was a farm vehicle, pointing out that they all came from farming backgrounds. Some sightings of a lone humanoid in a spacesuit may well have been Glyn Edwards, dressed up to make the most of the atmosphere of fear, as he admitted to the Western Mail in 1996. The other sightings remain unexplained...

January 23rd, 1974, and an explosion measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale was felt across the Berwyn Mountains area in north Wales at about 8:30 pm. Tremors frightened people in the villages of Landrillo and Llandderfel into congregating outdoors, and a brilliant light was seen in the sky, with lights of other colours over the mountain. Fearing an aircraft crash, a search and rescue team was scrambled from RAF Valley on Anglesey. It, like the search organised by local police, found nothing.

At least not officially.

Because the Berwyn Mountain Incident is Wales' answer to Roswell: it is often claimed to have been the site of a UFO crash and its subsequent cover up. It's even suggested that bodies were carried away from the site. A nurse named Pat Evans saw a UFO with flashing lights, but discredited suggestions that she turned back at the order of the military, police, or that she saw any aliens in the 1990s. Some suspect that she was paid to change her story. Some residents recall a large police and military presence - though outsiders maintain they are confusing 1974 with 1982, when a military aircraft crashed into the mountainside. Either way, outside police presence was on the scene very quickly.

Veteran UFOlogist Tony Dodd was very interested in the case, and in the 1990s claimed that he had a military source who had seen the humanoid corpses from Berwyn after they had been removed to Porton Down in Wiltshire. His colleagues, said the source, had transported live beings. There is a really comprehensive write up of the case HERE, building on Dodd's assertions.

Strange lights were also spotted in Manchester, Norfolk, Edinburgh, Sussex and Somerset that night, lights which astronomical researchers ascribe to bolide meteors. Other natural phenomena have been put forward to explain the events of the night, as has a possible military operation called Photoflash due to take place in the area. This 2001 write up by Andy Roberts digs more thoroughly into the case against.

Whatever the truth of the matter, it doesn't look like the Berwyn Mountain Incident is going to lose its status as the jewel in the crown of Welsh UFOlogy any time soon!

The Moberly-Jourdain Incident

The stars of possibly the best known time slip incident were Charlotte Anne Moberly, the first Principal of St. Hugh's College, Oxford, which had been founded as a women's hall of residence by Elizabeth Wordsworth in 1886, and Eleanor Jourdain, soon to become the Vice-Principal, who ran a school of her own and had authored a number of textbooks on Dante's Divine Comedy.

In the summer of 1901, Charlotte went to stay with Eleanor at her Paris apartment, where the latter tutored English children. On August 10th they took the train to Versailles, determined to go for a walk around the Petit Trianon, only to find it closed to the public. After taking a wrong turning the pair felt the atmosphere change; Eleanor said the scene was like a 'tableau vivant', a living picture, and Charlotte wrote: 'Everything suddenly looked unnatural, therefore unpleasant; even the trees seemed to become flat and lifeless, like wood worked in tapestry. There were no effects of light and shade, and no wind stirred the trees.'

Over the weeks that followed the pair wrote separate accounts of their experience, and began researching the history of the Trianon. They revisited the grounds, attempting to retrace their steps, but when that didn't work they turned their efforts to identifying the people they had seen that day. Charlotte claimed to have seen Marie Antoinette sketching, and both women claimed that a man they saw with an 'evil expression' was the Comte de Vaudreuil.

They interpreted their experience as proof the place was haunted, the paranormal being something both women firmly believed in. Charlotte claimed to have seen an apparition of Constantine at the Louvre in 1914, for example. So, in 1911, the pair published their accounts as An Adventure, using the names Elizabeth Morrison and Frances Lamont. (Their true identities were made public in 1931.)

An Adventure caught the public imagination and everyone had their own explanation for it, ranging from the plausible (they inadvertently wandered into a private costume party) to the downright weird (a lesbian affair caused them to have a shared hallucination). The end publication was certainly a much more elaborate affair than their initial written accounts, and the dating of their vision to 1792 is certainly open to question. The basic kernel of truth remains however - back in 1901 they experienced something they couldn't explain.

Caught on Camera

There are a whole bunch of photographs purporting to show time travellers and / or anachronistic devices. The time traveling hipster (above) is probably the most famous, though all it really shows is a casually dressed guy attending the 1941 reopening of the South Fork Bridge in British Columbia. (source) Then there's a scene from the Charlie Chaplin film The Circus (1928) which seems to show a woman chatting on a mobile phone - but it's more likely she's using an old school hearing aid.



Other snaps of retro mobile phones have equally mundane explanations, like the guy above rolling a cigarette on Towan Beach in Cornwall, although the below 1938 footage of a woman leaving a Dupont factory in Massachusetts is still proving a head scratcher!

Kersey Village Time Slip

After the Moberly-Jourdain incident, this is probably the most well known and best documented time slip experience, and it featured prominently in Andrew MacKenzie's 1997 Adventures in Time: Encounters with the Past. In October 1957 three 15-year-old cadets - William Laing, Michael Crowley, and Ray Baker - were on a Royal Navy weekend survival exercise. They saw the tower of St. Mary's church and heard the bells for Sunday service as they approached Kersey, but once they reached the village everything fell eerily silent.

The streets were deserted, void of modern technology (phone lines, etc), and the landscape was still, without even a breeze to disturb the picture. They looked through the windows of the houses to find whitewashed walls and no furniture, and the windows of a butcher's shop to see rotting green animal carcasses. The entire place seemed abandoned and creepy, and the boys were glad to leave. Once away from the village they looked back, only to see smoke rising from the chimneys and to hear the church bells ringing once again.

Years later, in 1988, Laing read Hauntings and Apparitions by Andrew MacKenzie and wrote him a letter. MacKenzie helped him track his old friends down, and conduct research into Kersey. One of the most convincing elements of the story was that Laing identified the 'Bridge House' as the shop where he had seen the rotting meat... it turned out that prior to 1905 the building had been a butcher's since at least 1790. Although there are potential explanations for what the trio saw - Kersey was already being used as a film location, for instance, with restrictions on visible power lines and so on - but, overall, their tale remains one of the most convincing examples of a time slip.

The Strange Story of Rudolph Fentz

Seemingly out of nowhere a young man dressed in late 19th century fashion appeared in the middle of New York's Times Square in June 1951. Confused and disorientated, the man was clearly out of place, but before bystanders could help he was hit by a taxi and killed. At the morgue his body was searched and various items were found on his person, none of them showing any sign of ageing, though they were 75 years old.

There was a bill for the care of a horse and the washing of a carriage, drawn by a livery stable on Lexington Avenue that was not listed in any address book, and a letter sent to a Rudolph Fentz on Fifth Avenue, dated 1876. Using that as a starting point, Captain Rihm of NYPD's Missing Persons Department tracked down a Rudolph Fentz Jr. Or, at least, his widow. Mrs Fentz told Rihm that her husband had died in 1946, but she couldn't give him any details about Rudolph Fentz Sr. He had gone out for a walk one evening in June 1876 and disappeared...

I'd say about six times out of ten, on hearing that I'm really into time-slip mysteries, people ask me if I've heard of this one. And, of course, I have. It's been written about countless times and included in innumerable time travel listicles. The only problem is that it's a sci-fi short written by Jack Finney, originally published in Collier's magazine in September 1951. No matter how many times his story is debunked, Rudolph Fentz lives on!

Ancient Technology

We're living in a digital age, with computer chips in everything from our smartphones to our washing machines. But that doesn't mean that every civilisation that came before ours was all about the sticks and the stones and the grunting. We don't know for sure how so many things from the ancient world worked. How they were made or what they were used for. Even when we work it out it can be hard to believe they really came up with it.

There's the Antikythera Mechanism, the Baghdad Battery, the idea of 'Ancient Astronauts', and a whole plethora of theories behind the creation of the pyramids, Stonehenge, the Olmec heads, etc, etc, etc. Were they the results of time travel, or aliens, or our ancestors just being cleverer than we pegged them for? One of the most famous examples has been soundly debunked however - the 800 year old mobile phone, BabyloNokia, was a viral photo of a 2012 artwork by Karl Weingärtner.

Flight in Time and Space

Victor Goddard, aka Sir Robert Victor Goddard, a senior RAF commander during WW2, was flying from Edinburgh to Andover in 1935. On the return trip Goddard was hit by bad weather, and struggled to control the plane - until the storm suddenly dissipated as he approached what was then the all but disused Gullane Aerodrome.

Except it was now bustling with activity, with numerous planes on the runway and mechanics everywhere. After passing the airfield the storm started up again, and Goddard had to put the strange sight from his mind and focus on getting home. In 1975 Goddard wrote about his experience in Flight Towards Reality, where he suggested he had lived through a time slip showing him Gullane as it would appear in the early 1940s, when it was home to No. 13 Flying Training School as RAF Drem.

Goddard was also famously involved with another paranormal incident. Freddy Jackson was an air mechanic who had been accidentally killed by a propeller but, on the day of his funeral, a formal squadron photograph revealed an extra face in the back row - recognised by everyone in attendance as Freddy... (There's a good investigation into it over at Skeptic.)

Bold Street, Liverpool

In my opinion, our best chance of finding out what's going on with the time slip phenomena is studying the dozens of stories coming out of Liverpool. One of the most repeated is that of an off-duty policeman named Frank. He was shopping with his wife in 1996 when, Dillon's Book Store suddenly became Cripps' women's clothing, before flashing back again leaving both him and a young woman who had entered in the hope of scouring a new vintage clothing store bewildered.

Then there's the tale of a young woman who was shocked by how cheap everything was in Mothercare, but had to leave her shopping behind when the cashier told her they didn't take cards. Later her mother told her that the store had closed down years before and was now a bank - when the woman went back the next day the building was, indeed, a bank.

My favourite of them all starts with a 19-year-old named Sean shoplifting in 2006. When a security guard gave chase Sean ran down Hanover Street before turning into a dead end called Brooks Alley. He couldn't catch his breath and felt strange, so stayed put expecting the guard to turn the corner and catch him. After a few minutes Sean went back down the alley only to find that things looked off. People were dressed strangely and street furniture was different - and when Sean tried his mobile phone to calm his nerves, it couldn't pick up a signal. That wasn't surprising, really, when he passed a news kiosk with papers dated May 18th 1967.

Freaking out, Sean picked up his speed until he reached H. Samuel. At this point he checked his phone again to find it working, but when he looked down the street he could still see 1967, even as he stood in 2006. The best bit of the story is the corroboration of the security guard. When he turned down Brooks Alley, certain he had him, Sean had disappeared!

Some people believe that aliens - like the truth - are out there. Some believe they have already arrived, be it sucking the blood out of cows, abducting suitably fertile women, or languishing in warehouses at secret US military bases. But some people go one step further -

Aliens already live among us.

They look like us, sound like us, and are all but indistinguishable from the rest of the population. Unless, of course, you're in the know. So here are five of the more famous alleged aliens.

#5. Orthon

George Adamski was - and is - a real Marmite figure. He is also the guy who really got the whole 'contactee' movement going in the 1950s. His background involved setting up his own church - allegedly for the legal right to produce his own wine during prohibition - and then letting people assume his camp was connected to the Palomar Observatory and that he himself had earned the title of 'Professor' legitimately.

In addition to a famous (and famously debunked) 1952 photograph of a UFO, Adamski is perhaps best known for his contact with the so-called 'Nordic' aliens. These Nordics hailed from Venus, had long blond hair, blue eyes, and communicated via telepathy. They also had weird names like Orthon and the desire to take randomers on trips around the Solar System.

Regardless of whether or not you believe, Adamski shaped much of the extraterrestrial discourse over the next few decades. He even got his own comic book! For more on Adamski's life and teachings, check out The Adamski Case online.

#4. Amicizia

If you've not heard of the Amicizia case you've been missing out on one hell of a story!

Italian for 'Friendship', the Amicizia case began back in 1956 when a kind of federation of alien races - the 'W56' - made contact with various individuals in Italy. These aliens wanted to help us help ourselves. Or, in other words, had the usual mission of stopping us from blowing our planet up before we had chance to evolve past the need for petty violence. Where the W56 differ from other contact tales is in their assertion that they're involved in their own space wars.

Not only are they busy fighting other races, they're also keeping us safe from the 'CTR' - a race created as a (failed) experiment by the W56. Whatever. The one thing we can be sure of is that to keep battling, the well-to-do Italians they contacted needed to keep bankrolling them. Stefano Breccia, university professor and contactee, interviewed around 80 other contactees for his books on the subject and revealed the W56 - whoever they are and whatever their origins - have been provided with industrial quantities of strontium, barium nitrate, and fruit which they allegedly turned into green pills that provided 48 hours sustenance.

And money. Obviously.

#3. Omnec Onec

Born on the astral plane of Venus, Omnec Onec grew up as Sheila Gipson - an American girl whose body she took over at age of seven after the 'real' Sheila died in a bus accident in 1955. Although she told nobody about the switch while a child, she wrote up her story in the 1960s and in 1991 finally published her autobiography From Venus I Came. Omnec shared all kinds of revelations, from her spiritual teachings to the fact that inventor Nikola Tesla was actually a Venusian. (There's a whole website dedicated to that theory HERE.)

The whole spiritual angle, and Omnec's connection with religious group Eckankar, may be fodder for incredulity but there seems no doubt that Omnec and those close to her truly believe in her otherworldly origins.

#2. Valiant Thor

Dr. Frank E. Stranges, an evangelical minister and founder of NICUFO (National Investigations Committee on Unidentified Flying Objects), introduced the world to Thor in his 1967 book Stranger at the Pentagon. In 1959, so he claimed, Stranges met Val - an alien from Venus who was working as an advisor to Eisenhower at the Pentagon. Val came to Earth aboard the VICTOR ONE on March 6th 1957, alongside fellow Venusians: Jill, Taniya, and his brother Donn. They were on a three year mission to ensure Earth didn't obliterate itself through nuclear testing.

Stranges related various details about the aliens and their homeworld. They lived in subterranean communities on Venus, and had evolved far past the point of war and commerce - though not legible handwriting, if these documents from Raymond Keller are to be believed. Val had no fingerprints and told Stranges that humans were given them after their fall in the Garden of Eden, before going on to explain: "I know that Jesus is the Alpha and Omega of yours and everyone else’s faith. He today has assumed His rightful position as the ruler of the universe and is preparing a place and a time for all who are called by His Name to ascend far above the clouds to where His Power and Authority shall never again be disputed."

Former US government geologist and engineer Philip Schneider also had an encounter with Val, according to a lecture he gave in May 1995. Except his Val bore little resemblance to Stranges'. He had six fingers and toes, an IQ of 1200, one giant lung, copper oxide blood like an octopus, and had been working with the US government since 1937. He was also very blond - Schneider presented a photograph of this Val, sitting near Scheider's father, Oscar, during the Final Briefing on the USS Eldridge in 1943. Scheider might have gone on to say more about Val, but was found dead in January 1996 (supposedly suicide, though his wife claimed murder).

The evidence Stranges presented primarily consisted of various photographs of Val and his crewmates, taken by August C. Roberts during a Flying Saucer Club meeting (13/07/1958) at High Bridge - the New Jersey farm belonging to Howard Menger. In the colourised picture below we see Jill, Donn, and Val:

#1. Dolores Barrios

In August 1954 there was a UFO conference on Mount Palomar - Adamski's stomping ground - where the man himself presented a painting of Orthon and told over 1,000 attendees that Venusians were already living among us. When the talks wound down it didn't take long for a rumour to spread that three exotic looking attendees were actually visitors from outer space.

Someone, history doesn't seem to have recorded who, asked them:

"Are you or are you not Venusians?"
"No." (The woman said with a calm smile. So says the internet.)
"Why are you here?
"Because we are interested in this subject."
"Do you believe in flying saucers?"
"Yes."
"Is it true that, as Mr. Adamski says, that they come from Venus?"
"Yes. They are from Venus."



Brazilian journalist João Martins, writing for O Cruzeiro magazine, took the opportunity to interview them, learning that the woman was a dress designer named Dolores Barrios and her two male companions were musicians named Donald Morand and Bill Jackmart. All three of them lived in Manhattan Beach, California, and although they declined to have their photographs taken, they went on to attend the second day of the conference and ended up giving in and posing before it was over.

What I find most interesting about these cases is that most of these alleged aliens have never been identified - some of them don't even have any contenders. Compare this to, say, Billy Meier's photographs of the aliens Asket and Nera. (Or, you know, Dean Martin Variety Show dancers Michelle DellaFave and Susan Lund.) It is harder to find regular Joes as opposed to performers on national television, sure, but some of the distinctive looking individuals listed here would likely still have turned heads and attracted attention...
